How to Maintain Friendships Through Virtual Connectivity

One of the immediate impacts of the coronavirus pandemic was the introduction of social distancing and isolation. Everybody had to stay at home to prevent the further spread of the virus. However, staying at home has never been an easy task. It can be a difficult endeavor for people who typically interact with others at work and social events. If this situation continues, some individuals may develop stress and anxiety symptoms.

Thankfully, we are living in an era where technological advances have eased communication. You don’t have to meet people physically to start a conversation with them. Several online platforms, including social media sites, provide plenty of options to connect with friends and relatives.

Protecting yourself from COVID-19 doesn’t have to result in social isolation. Here is how you can connect with friends and family during these trying times.

Create and Participate

Consider saying yes when invited to join an online social hour, coffee time or game night. Ward off feelings of isolation by being part of a group conversation or enjoy one-on-one phone time. Make time for these important interactions. You can also lead efforts to create group chat time – perhaps a standing appointment with friends once a week. Not only will this help you stay connected, but it allows you to check in on others.

Utilize the Power of Social Media

Social media platforms are introducing advanced features each month. Currently,  most social media platforms provide video chat support. You can use these tools to reach out to family members and friends, even when you are in isolation. It is also possible to create a group chat where you can recreate a family party.

Being in quarantine can cause restlessness, but social media can liven the mood. It doesn’t matter where somebody is — you can reach them on social media and connect. For instance, you can ask your friends to prepare coffee, and then all of you can interact on video group chat.

Exercise Patience

Your patience will determine whether an acquaintance becomes a close friend. Online friendships take time before they can reach a certain level. Group gatherings on Zoom are a great way to meet new people or deepen friendships with others. Even though in-person meetings are still limited in some places, virtual conversation has value.

Don’t Fake Anything

If you want genuine and long-term friendships, you should just be yourself. Virtual gatherings may seem awkward at first but over time, can be an important way to create or maintain friendships. Be authentic and expect the same of others.

When you project your genuine interests and traits, you will attract similar-minded people. Such contacts can blossom into lifetime friendships.

Have Watch Parties

Many online platforms, such as Facebook, now offer a watch party feature. Several individuals can watch the same video on the same platform at the same time. Since the streaming occurs simultaneously, reactions and comments will appear in real time.

Facebook watch parties can be saved so members can watch the recap later. Even the comments will also be available for later viewing. This is one of the best ways to connect with family members.

Getting Started

Human beings are social creatures. We need to connect with other people to improve our health and reduce stress. Although the pandemic has reduced physical meeting opportunities, virtual connectivity will keep the conversation going.
