Staying active as we age

There seem to be a lot of “rules” that people apply to getting older. Most are just pure nonsense. Aging is a subjective process! In this blog we wanted to talk about some of the ways to avoid becoming “old” as we age.

Active vs. Sedentary

If you want to feel younger, do more. Part of how we feel about our age is a direct measurement of our vitality. If you want to increase your vitality, engage in more things that you love. Staying active as we age is a great way to keep up our momentum.

One of the best ways to become more active is to join an exercise, group. Tai Chi, Yoga, or even a walking club all offer entry-level options. Set your goal to improve your fitness level and endurance. Exercise is good for our bodies and has benefits for our mental health as well. Have you ever noticed how much better you feel even after a short walk around the block?  To increase the fun, get your friends to join you.

Balance Money with Quality of Life

There are always a few areas where expenses can be trimmed, but it is fun to earmark a little bit every month for something special. Plan a trip, go out to dinner, throw a party. A pot-luck is a budget-friendly way to host a dinner party. Make events even more entertaining by offering activities like white elephant bingo, scavenger hunts, or even a trivia party. Your mind gets active and your social life stays in top gear.

Do you have a bucket list? Pull it out, dust it off, and see what you can do about achieving the goals on that list. Even on a budget, you can work on your bucket list. You may not be able to do all of the traveling you would like, but with the Internet, you can enrich your life through researching interests online and interacting through social media. Get your grandkids involved in this too. Those whippersnappers know all the internet tricks to help you out, and they work for cookies.

Focus on What you Can do Today

Life is not so fun if you just sit around. Join a group of like-minded people where you can share your ideas about things you have in common. Even solitary activities – like reading or knitting – can become social activities when you join a book club or a knitting group. There is a lot of living left to do, and that is exactly what you should be doing — living!
